The wedding cake is one major aspect of weddings. For centuries, the wedding cake has been put on a pedestal. It’s either used as the centerpiece on the buffet table or placed on a special table intentional specifically for the cake. The reason why wedding cakes ar so important for weddings is that they’re part of the tradition. The bride and groom are the ones who take the first bite. They each take a spoon of cake and feed it to their spouse. According to superstition, the amount of cake you give your spouse is relative to the amount of children you will have.

Wedding Cake History

The traditional wedding cake is a multi-layered, vanilla-flavored cake with edible flowers adorning the sides and a bride and groom figurine on top. It’s usually very elaborate.

But over time, a lot of things change. Tradition will have to give way to the new trends. Incidentally, the wedding cake tradition has also been affected by the change in times.

Modern Wedding Cakes

Nowadays, instead of choosing the traditional vanilla wedding cake, couples choose for modern cakes designed by “cake designers”. They would usually choose cakes that fit their personalities or their wedding’s theme.

Some couples forgo the tradition white cake in favor of a cake which has the colors of their wedding. For example, if your wedding’s color theme was blue and yellow, you could have a cake that has the same colors.

They also base their choice of cake on the wedding’s theme. If they had a wedding with a Hawaiian theme, they would choose a wedding cake that’s molded like a pineapple. If you have a beach wedding, you might want to have a star-fish shaped cake or a ocean shell molded cake.

Some couples also choose to have cakes that look like a stack of presents. Some choose cakes which look like pillows. Some cakes ar even made to look like the bride’s wedding dress with exactly the same lace patterns and adornments.
